Смоковница (инжир, фиговое дерево) (Ficus carica) на западе Балканского полуострова

[Fig tree (Ficus carica) in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula]

Abstract: Abstract: The paper deals with the names for fig tree Ficus carica in the languages and dialects of the western part of the Balkan Peninsula (mainly in Albanian and Serbo-Croatian). The most ancient names of fig tree in the region are explored: Grk. συκιά, σύκα (< σῦκον, τῦκον), Lat. fīcus, and also Dalmat./Ital. pruna, brun-, mur-/mor etc. and South Slav. smokvа. The paper gives a complete classification of more than 120 Albanian and Serbo-Croatian names for fig and its varieties. It is based on different characteristics (including – fruits’: size, colour, shape, flavour, moisture, the time of ripening, the thickness of the peel etc.). These names are etymologically analyzed. The phytonyms derived from expressive words, proper names and place names as well as facts of xeno-nomination are shown. It is demonstrated that the name of fig tree was given to some other plants: prickly pear, agave and birthwort. The name of fig fruit got into somatic lexis.

Medieval Bulgarian anthroponyms and toponyms of popular Semitic origin. Aspects of the language situation in the early medieval Bulgarian state

Abstract: The present article deals with Medieval Bulgarian anthroponyms and toponyms of Syriac and Arabic origin. They have all been registered in the medieval epigraphy and written sources of Bulgarian and Byzantine origin and up to this moment they have not been examined in linguistic studies. In the second part of the article on the basis of previous investigations on the traces of direct translations from Syriac in Old Slavonic texts of Bulgarian origin an attempt at reconstructing the peculiarities of the medieval Old Slavonic (Bulgarian) – Syriac bilingualism is made. Some examples of literary translations of idioms, disregard for the metaphoric meaning of words and transliterations of uncommon words give arguments in favor of the hypothesis that this form of bilingualism had a popular character and typologically did not differ essentially from some latter forms of bilingualism registered in the 19th and 20th centuries.
